A mobile application that promotes recycling habits received first prize. Held in partnership with Tashkent University (TUIT) from November 2018 to May 2019, the UNESCO Contest attracted young developers, who are between 18 and 30 years old.
The App Contest, organized within the framework of UNESCO’s YouthMobile Initiative for empowering young women and men challenged the participants to propose solutions addressing local issues linked to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The final stage of the contest was held on 28 May 2019. Five teams consisting of twelve students from different regions of the country, including four girls, presented six mobile applications at an event organized at UNESCO’s Office in Tashkent. The jury included specialists from UNESCO and TUIT. The mobile apps presented were:
- DPS: an app that provides support to passengers and taxi drivers.
- Green Kent: an app that is proposed to solve environmental issues, in particular waste management.
- Milliy Art: an app that is developed for artisans, especially women artisans, who can post their works on the app and sell them through the app.
- TUIT FF Schedule: an app that allows students and teachers of the university to get access to class schedules easily through smartphone
- Umid: an app that is designed for the pregnant women, which allows track pregnancy progress with the embodied calendar. It stores all doctor prescriptions, medical data, results of examinations in one place
- UzVisit: an app that allows tourists to explore Uzbekistan through 360° views
Sayyora Rakhimova, a second year girl of TUIT and her team won the first place of the contest with Apps “Green Kent” and “Umid”.
“Recycling can help preserve a healthy environment and contribute to savings”, she said presenting Green Kent – “recycling allows people to obtain necessary materials from the garbage for different purposes (construction, energy generation, etc.). Through this mobile application users can directly contact waste management/ recycling companies and learn about the closest garbage collection and sorting stations.” “The App ‘Umid’ aims at offering a comfort for pregnant woman in terms of information provision” Sayyora added about the second app that her team developed: “One of the advantages of the app is that a woman can get a help any time: informative tips, possibility to call an ambulance and receive consultations from a doctor” - said Sayora Rakhimova.
As the winner of the first prize, Sayyora was rewarded for 1500 USD to finalize and further develop the two applications. All the other five teams also received 500 USD each to support them build their mobile applications. Meanwhile, UNESCO Tashkent will work with TUIT to support the development of these app and further develop joint actions to empower more young people with digital skills in the country.
The UNESCO YouthMobile initiative deploys and supports projects worldwide to promote training in digital technical skills and abilities among young women and men.
